Projects, files & revisions

Where a project lives on your Mac, what's saved when, and how revisions work.

Your projects

The Project menu in the top bar has what's done to the whole project: Save Revision… and Open Project.

Open Project takes you to the Projects page, which lists every project, with where its file is. Open one to carry on, or start a new one with + New Project. Under each project, Revisions lists the revisions you've saved.

What's on your Mac

Each project has a home in the folder you chose for it:

  • Your Project.fab — the whole project in one file: every scene, element, template, image and revision.
  • Your Project Revisions — a PDF of each revision you've saved.
  • Your Project Notes — your notes as RTF files, and any files you've added to the project. See Notes.

While you work, Fabrication keeps its working copy in its own data folder, and saves every change there as you make it. The .fab file is rewritten in full when you save a revision — written under a temporary name first, then put in place, so a failed write can never damage the copy you had.

In this beta, Fabrication can't yet open a .fab file back in — for example on another Mac. Keep working on your projects in the app, where they are; the files are your backup.

Revisions

Choose Project › Save Revision… from any view, name the revision (“First draft”, “before the Act 2 rewrite”) and choose Save revision. A revision is the whole manuscript as it is at that moment, formatted, with its illustrations. It's kept in the project and written as a PDF into the project's Revisions folder.

The name of your latest revision, and when you saved it, is under the project's title in the top bar.

Nothing you type is ever lost by saving a revision: every revision is kept, and the project keeps a full history of changes for undo and redo.
