Fabrication for Creators

Your world

Images & illustrations

Pictures for your characters and places, from your Mac or your own image service — and illustrations in the text.

A picture for an element

Double-click an empty picture on a card (or choose Add image or Replace…) to choose where it comes from:

  • From your computer — your Mac's own file window.
  • Generate — with an image service of your own (see below). Describe what you want, or have Fabrication work it out from your manuscript: it finds the passages that describe the element, and offers a description — with those passages — for you to edit before anything is made. Pick a model and a shape, and choose Use this image.

Every image for an element — uploaded or generated, used or not — is kept in its folio, under the main image on its open card, along with other files (references, models) and saved descriptions. Generated pictures carry an AI mark and say which model made them.

Image services

Generating images uses your own account with a service, so you choose what you spend. Connect one in Settings › General › Image services (or Log in in the image window): its own sign-in page opens, and you approve Fabrication there. Fabrication never sees your password, and the key it's given is kept in your Mac's Keychain — never in your project or its files.

The first service is OpenRouter.

Illustrations in the text

In the Narrative, Illustration puts a picture where the cursor is — one already in your World, or a new one. Choose how it sits on the page: on the left or right with the words flowing around it, centred, or a full page of its own; its width; the space around it; and a caption. Click it in the text to change it.

Illustrations count towards a scene's pages, appear in revision PDFs, and lead each scene's tile on the timeline.
